Question by Patrick: Hows does a TV Tuner for PC “specifically work”?
What does it connect too?
Do I need a cable box? or cable internet? to receive tv channels on the pc.

If I purchase a TV Tuner and put it into my computer, what other components do I need or need to hook the tv tuner too in order to receive video channels.

There are a couple of different types of TV tuners that you can get, some plug onto the motherboard of the pc through the pci slots, some are external devices that plug in with usb, and some are ever devices that simple use the pc monitor to display a picture.

You can get cards that work with various services, satellite, normal terrestrial (yagi) type aerials, im not sure about cable but there is probably one out there somewhere.

The general idea is that they have the decoder contained within the device, so supply it with the appropriate signal (aerial dish cable etc) and it will decode the picture and display it on your pc. Some can also use your pc’s hard drive for recording and other features.

Question by Druid Dude: Can anyone suggest a good TV Tuner that works with Satellite?
I’ll be getting Dish Network in a few days and I want to setup on of my PC’s to watch it, since my monitor is bigger than the TV in my bedroom. I’ve looked around but haven’t really found a CLEAR answer to what will work with satellite and receive DIGITAL satellite signals.
We’ll be getting a DishDVR 625 model receiver. It’s a dual tuner.

I just want something entry level, cheap, no need for every single feature known to man, but also a plus if it comes cheap.

I DON’T want links to lame “free satellite tv” crap so please save your time spammers.

As of now I don’t think there is anything thing you do to get Satellite onto your computer. I want to do the same thing, and there isn’t a lot of options. Mostly because of a couple of things. Mostly Digital Rights. Dish wants to make sure that the programs its sending out aren’t just copied over and over again. So there has to be some type of encryption to stop this. Next is HDMI, with HDTV signal it needs to go through an HDMI cables, and right now this are few and far for computers.
ATI came up with a cable box for home Cable users. (look up cable card). this had promise at least for home users and cable companies but it seems like ATI has kind of given up on the idea for now. (they probably have other things to worry about). I also know that DirecTV and Microsoft were working together to get Windows Media Center to work with DirecTV. But that probably won’t happen until years end.
I haven’t heard of any other option with Satellite. The only option I was always given was to get some HDTV over the air receiver. This allows you to record over the air programs.

Question by fi4: why do I need a tuner card if I just want to use “Go for TV” on my PC?
Unable to evaluate any features of “Go to TV” because setup is looking for a tuner card. I cannot even evaluate listings or available movies. The tuner card should only restrict viewing content on a TV not a PC.

Because your computer has to have a way to recieve a tv signal. It needs a physical medium to get in. The tuner card doesn’t really have anything to do with restricting content. That’s software’s job

If you don’t have a tuner card and don’t plan on watching tv, there’s no reason to be going into the software. The software is saying “You have no reason to be here if you don’t have a way to give me a tv signal.

The best thing would be to have another cable line ran down the wall where your pc is. An Electrician or cable guy can do it.

Direct TV receivers put out 100% digital output and I bought a TV tuner card of my PC that is supposed to be digital and Analog these are the connectors on the card… Coaxial cable input S-Video input and A/V input and audio in mainly what I need to know is how do I hook everything up so that I am still watching digital picture? I have a 22 inch widescreen monitor also that is on digital mode along with the video card.

A DirecTV receiver receives digital satellite signals, but outputs video in analog format (through S-Video, composite, or component). You can use either S-video or composite (yellow video input); S-video is preferred.

Note that a computer monitor’s resolution is considerably higher than that of a standard-definition TV broadcast. If you’re using 480i, you will notice blocky video. However, if you receive 720p or 1080p high-definition video, it will look noticeably better on your 22″ monitor (I assume you’re running it at 1680×1050).

The “digital” on your TV tuner refers to the fact that it can receive digital over-the-air broadcasts. The DirecTV receiver does that for you. Thus, you will not be receiving a fully digital picture, but rather a digital picture converted to analog before being sent to your TV tuner.

Thinking about ditching cable and or DISH for a nice HD antenna for free TV. I however would still like to record shows, but have no DVR. I understand a PC tuner card could act like a DVR. I just got WinTV TV tuner and when I do a scan for channels, it does not pick up any channels.
I have tried it with my DirectTV cable installed to the tuner card, from the reciever to the tuner card, and without the DirectTV and I get no channels.

Is there something wrong with the card? Or should I uninstall and reinstall the software???

try to uninstall the software and reinstall the drivers before reinstalling other software and double check your connections
